FRIDGES CAN MAKE YOU SICK?

My first house I bought was an old fixer upper. The house came with some pretty old appliances too, but at least they worked. Or, so I thought. Shortly after moving in I started getting sick, first e.coli, then salmonella, then camplyobacter, and e.coli again. The health department kept calling my house to find our where I had been eating. I gave them a report of all the places I frequented, never thinking that I had been poisoning myself right at home.

Until one morning at 3am. I woke up and decided to get a drink from the fridge. I didn’t bother to turn on the light, since the fridge light comes on automatically. I noticed that when I closed the door of the fridge the light didn’t go out. I checked and discovered that the switch to turn off the light had broken. The lightbulb being on all the time inside my fridge generated enough heat to increase the temperature to the danger zone. (temperatures between 4c – 60c)

If I had a thermometer in my fridge, and understood safe cold holding temperatures I could have avoided so many illnesses, and time off work with loss of income too. I learned my lesson, now I help others learn about food safety because I believe it is one of the most important things in life.
